New Guinea is a large island off the northern coast of Australia, lying south-east of the Philippines. It has a land area of 312,167 square miles (808,510 km2) and is the second largest island in the world (Greenland is the largest island). Politically, New Guinea falls under two jurisdictions. The western part of the island is a province of Indonesia named Irian Jaya. The eastern part of the island, with offshore islands, forms the independent state of Papua New Guinea.
