Nazino Island was the site of a tragedy known through several names: cannibal island, death island, and others. In 1933 over 6000 people were forcibly relocated to a desolate island in Siberia and dropped off in a settlement experiment. Within several weeks, 4000 of those who arrived were dead or had disappeared.

The people who were brought to the island arrived by a barge, were from cities so they had no agricultural knowledge, they had few tools and many were criminals and other "undesirables". The Soviet Union kept guards around, and any who were caught attempting to escape were shot. Very little food was provided and it was not long after that people started to eat each other.
