Morocco is bordered by Algeria to the east and the western Sahara to the south. The largest city is Casablanca. The capital city is Rabat. The full name of the country is the Kingdom of Morocco. Some of the other large cities in Morocco are: Marrakech, Tanjier, and Safi.

The country was inhabited first by the Berbers, then became a Roman province in the 1st century A.D. In the 7th century it was conquered by Arabs, and later united under Berber-Muslim dynasties. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco, and in 1912, the French established a protectorate over most of the region. Morocco achieved independence from France in 1956. The country celebrates its Independence Day on March 2nd. Morocco is now a constitutional monarchy.

The official language is Arabic, although local dialects are also spoken. Many businesses conduct dealings in French, and Spanish is also spoken. The majority of the population, over 98%, is Muslim, and their legal system is based on Islamic Law.

Moroccan leather, a soft pebble-fine leather made from goat skin and tanned with sumac, comes from Morocco.
