Monmouth University was founded in 1933 in New Jersey as a two-year institution, and then expanded to offer four-year programs in 1956. It became a university in 1995, and now offers 33 undergraduate and 21 graduate degree programs. It has more than 1,600 resident undergraduate students.

It has a polling institute that surveys voters near elections.
