Militant Tendency was a group of Trotskyists within the Labour Party, organised around the newspaper 'Militant' and led by Ted Grant, a former leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party. It achieved some strength in certain constituency Labour Parties in the 1970s and early '80s, deselecting right-wing and centrist Labour MPs and parliamentary candidates and replacing them with more ideologically acceptable candidates, and it was also able to gain control of Liverpool City Council in the early 1980s. In 1985 the Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock expelled Militant leaders from the party, and began a process of rooting out others. In 1991 the last remaining members withdrew from the Labour Party.
