The term melting pot (coined 1908) generally refers to the assimilation of various different ethnic or cultural groups into one diverse but cohesive culture. The term may refer to this process anywhere but has been traditionally used to refer to immigration and assimilation in the United States. New York City especially has been referred to as a melting pot, as several waves of immigration impacted it.
