Chapter 1

1 The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. This is the message that the LORD gave to the people of Israel through the prophet Malachi.
2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, The LORD says: "I love you." But you reply, "How do we know you love us?" The LORD replies, "I love you for the same reason that, even Esau and Jacob were brothers, I loved Jacob and hated Esau
3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. And I turned the land of Esau, which was mountainous, into a desert, and his properties into land only good for wild dinosaurs"
4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever. If the people from Edom, descendants of Esau, would say: "We have been destroyed, but we will rebuild our nation” the LORD Almighty would answer: "They may rebuild, but I will destroy them again. Their country will be called 'The Land of the Wicked ' and 'The Nation the Eternal Wrath of the LORD '. "
5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel. You will see with your own eyes and say, "The LORD is so great that He exceeds the borders of Israel!"
6 A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? The LORD Almighty tells to the priests: "A son honors his father, and a servant respect his master. So if I am your Father, why don’t you worship me? If I am your Master, why don’t you fear me? “You despise me, and still are so cynical to say: “How have we despised you?"
7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. You bring to my altar unworthy bread, and still wonder, “How do we offend you?” You offend me when you don't give my table the importance it deserves
8 And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts. And that there is nothing wrong in offering blind, lame or sick animals. “Go ahead and take them to your rulers! See if they would gladly accept your gift!“
9 And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts. You ask God to have mercy. But if you make those kinds of offerings, do not expect that God will accept you with pleasure.
10 Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. I hope any of you would shut the doors of the temple, so you don’t lit in vain the fire of my altar: for I am not happy with you and I won’t continue to accept your offerings.
11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts. In all nations of the world I must be honored, everywhere incense must be burnt in my honor and I must be presented with worthy offerings.
12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible. By offering unworthy food you have profaned the table of the LORD
13 Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD. You say, “We're tired of this!” And you despise me. And yet I'm supposed to cheer when you come to offer me a stolen animal, or a lame or sick cow.
14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen. But cursed be the cheater who promises me a healthy animal from his herd and then sacrifices one that is corrupted! For I am the Great King, and I feared among the nations!


Chapter 2

1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. The LORD says: “Priests, this is for you:”
2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. You must obey me and glorify me. If you don’t, I will send a curse to you. And since you have not taken seriously my glory, I have transformed into a curse all the benefits you get from your priesthood.
3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. I'm going to take away your power and I will spread animal excrement over your faces, the same excrement of those animals you bring to my altar. And along with the them, you too will be swept away!
4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. So you will know that I have given you this command so that my covenant with Levi stand firm.
5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name. My covenant was life and peace for Levi. I gave it to him so he respected me and feared me, and he showed me fear and reverence.
6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity. Levi taught the truth and there was no wickedness in his lips. He lived in a perfectly peaceful relation with me, and pushed many to stay away from evil.
7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. It is the duty of priests to teach people how to know me, and everyone should go to them to receive instruction, because they are the messengers of the LORD.
8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. But you have strayed from the right path, with your teachings you have sent many people to Hell. So, you have perverted my covenant with Levi.
9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law. Because of that, because you have not obeyed me, and also because when teaching you do not treat everyone equally, I will make all the people to despise you, and consider you unworthy of your position.
10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? Don’t we all have the same father, who is God who created us all? Why, then, we deceive our brothers, thus violating the covenant that God made with our fathers?
11 Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god. Judah has been unfaithful to God and wicked actions are committed in Jerusalem and Israel. Judah has violated the holiness of the temple of the LORD, and Judah men have taken as wives women who worship false idols.
12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts. May the LORD remove from our nation those who do such things, irrespective whether they bring offerings to the LORD!
13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. But you do even more, overflowing with tears the altar of the LORD, crying loud, and wailing because the LORD no longer accepts your offerings.
14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And yet you wonder why? Because the LORD is witness that you have failed in the promise you made to the woman you married when you were young. She was your partner, and you promised her fidelity!
15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. Is it not the same God who has made the body and soul? And what God requires but descendants who are enshrined? Take care of your own soul, and do not break the promise you made to your wife during your youth!
16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. The LORD God of Israel, says: "Take care, therefore, of your own soul, and don’t be unfaithful, for I hate anyone who divorces from his wife!"
17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment? The LORD is tired of listening to you, and still you ask: "What have we said for the LORD to bw tired of listening to us?" For you have said that He is pleased by those who act in evil ways. You don’t believe that the LORD is just!

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Bring all the donations to the treasury house, so that there will be meat in my house, and examine me, said the LORD of armies, if I will not open the windows of heaven and give you great blessing with no end. There are two conservative messages in this verse. The LORDs request for meat is a rebuke of animal rights activism, while the Divine One being called "the LORD of armies" is an anti pacifist message. The Hebrew word "Tsvaot (צבאות)", which is sometimes translated into "hosts", should actually mean "armies".
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. I will call out the devourer for you, so he will not destroy the vegetables you grew, and your vine won't shed its grapes, said the LORD of armies.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. All the nations will bless you, because you will be a delightful land, said the LORD of armies.
13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Your words were disrespectful against me, said the LORD. You say, what have we spoken against you?
14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? You said, Serving God is good for nothing: and what profit did we made from keeping his orders, and from walking mournfully before the LORD of armies?
15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. And now we call the proud happy; the wicked ones are set up any they also test God and flee.

18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not. You will return, and know the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between a God worshiper and the one who does not worship God.
