Loyola University Chicago is an Illinois private, Jesuit university founded in 1870 as St. Ignatius College.[3] It is the United States's largest Jesuit, Catholic university.[3] The school ranked #112 in US News's "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[4]
Athletics
The men's basketball team won a national championship in 1963.[5] The team started four African American players, which caused controversy in the second round when Mississippi Governor Ross R. Barnet banned Mississippi State University from traveling to play the Loyola team.[6]
55 years later the 2018 team would become a "Cinderella" story, as an #11 seed they would make the Final Four before losing to national runner-up Michigan.
