Love Me Tender was Elvis Presley's first film, and the song with the same title that was also used in the film was a #1 hit. It was originally called The Reno Brothers, but was changed as the song rose in popularity. It is a Western film featuring Richard Egan, Debra Paget, and Presley. It was considerably different from most of Presley's other films, which were cheery musicals (with the exception of Charro! which only featured one song and was a serious movie by Presley). This film was the only one where Presley did not receive first billing.
Presley plays Clint Reno, the youngest of the four Reno brothers. He takes care of the house while his older brothers go to fight for the Confederates in the American Civil War. The family is misinformed that the eldest brother Vance was killed on the battlefield. When Vance comes back from the war, he finds that his old girlfriend Cathy maried Clint. The family struggles with this issue. Vance get involved with a robbery. Vance tries to return the money, against the interest of some of the Confederates. Vance and Clint end up in a shootout, and Clint loses, dying. The money is returned and the Reno boys are acquitted. Clint is buried at the family farm.[1]
