Liberal Republican

Not to be confused with the Liberal Republican Party, a short-lived U.S. political party in the 1870s

A liberal Republican, also known as a Rockefeller Republican, is a RINO that holds an overall moderate to liberal voting record, almost always crossing over their party line on social issues and, occasionally, on fiscal matters. Liberal Republicans tend to strongly oppose Donald Trump and often favor hawkish neoconservative foreign policies in addition to the D.C. establishment. Common examples include Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who known as RINOs currently serving in the United States Senate.

The term “Rockefeller Republican” was coined largely out of the liberal views of Nelson Rockefeller, the vice president of the United States under Gerald Ford's presidency. The term originally held a strong Northeast regional connotation and was not applied to liberal Republicans nationwide.
