Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich (German: Fürst Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein) (1773-1859), was an Austrian nobleman, and is considered by many to be the most important diplomat of all time. He played a large role in the treaties of Tordesillas and Utrecht, was important in convening the Congress of Vienna, and refused to make peace with Prussia on the terms offered by Otto von Bismarck. He is also remembered today as an author and theorist in the area of military science.
