Juris Doctor

In the United States, a Juris Doctor is a first professional degree that is usually a prerequisite to bar admission. While commonly referred to as a "Doctor of Law", some law schools refer to it as a Doctor of Jurisprudence. The degree is conferred after a three-year course of study at a law school, which will generally require an undergraduate degree for admission. Many state bars have set stringent requirements for amount and content of instruction, leading to standardization of curriculum among schools.
