John N. Mitchell

John Newton Mitchell (September 15, 1913–November 9, 1988) served as United States Attorney General for President Richard Nixon from 1969-1972. Previously he served as an attorney in New York City and in 1968 he managed Nixon's successful presidential campaign. As Attorney General Mitchell was criticized for increasing telephone wiretaps on private citizens without court authorization, prosecuting Vietnam War protesters and attempting to block publication of Pentagon Papers.

He is the only Attorney General to be sentenced to time in prison on charges of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and perjury.
