John Lackland was the son of Henry II and the brother of Richard the Lionheart. He lived from December 24, 1166 to October 18, 1216. John succeeded his brother to the throne and proved to be a lazy, selfish and tyrannical ruler. It is said that during his fits of temper, he would roll on the floor, chewing on the legs of tables, rugs, or anything else in sight.
His oppression finally drove his knights and barons to take him prisoner and force him to sign the Magna Carta. This document limited the power of the king and established the English Parliament. One of its most important statements was that the king was under the law. John believed that he was the law.
