Janjaweed

The Janjaweed is the paramilitary group in Darfur, Sudan. They are the primary instigators in the Darfur Genocide, where thousands of the non-Baggara population in Darfur are being killed. They are directly tied to the government as the government finances them.

Origin

The Janjaweed are predominantly members of Muslim herding tribes, specifically the Baggara. They were created, armed, and funded by the Sudanese government of Omar Hassan al-Bashir to fight rebels. They committed the genocide that occurred there in concert with the Sudanese army.
