The Italian game in chess is an opening by White which begins by advancing its King's pawn and subsequently, on the next move or later, places its bishop on c4 (Bc4) in order to control the diagonal through the center towards f7.
This game leads to gambit play or slower, incremental moves, depending on how Black responds to it.
The name of this opening is from the play by Italian chess masters in the 1500s.
