The Hessians were the approximately 30,000 German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution.[1] A treaty in early 1776 between Lord North and the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel brought 12,000 soldiers under British command.[2][3]

They were an early form of contract soldiers.[4]
