Gustav III of Sweden (1746-1792 AD) was an 18th-century Swedish king. He is among the more well-known of Swedish monarchs. Among other things, he reinstated absolute monarchy, staged a coup and waged war against Russia. What he is most famous for however is two things: His love for theatre and culture in general, and his assassination.
On 16 March 1792, Gustav III was shot by the former military officer Jakob Johan Anckarström during a masked ball at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, as part of a conspiracy by a group of disgruntled nobles. They planned on staging a coup - This failed, as the king did not immediately die. The conspirators were executed. Almost two weeks later on 29 March, Gustav III died due to an infection in the wound. He was succeeded by his son, Gustav IV Adolf.
