Ghana is a nation of west Africa. It has a southern Atlantic Ocean coastline, and is bounded to the west by Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), to the north by Burkina Faso and to the east by Togo. Its capital city is Accra. Ghana has a land area of 92,100 square miles (238,537 sq km) and a population of 23 millions.

Ghana was formerly a British colony and was known as Gold Coast. It was the first British territory in sub-saharan Africa to gain independence (excepting South Africa), in 1957.
