Georgia is a state in the southern United States. It was one of the original thirteen British colonies in the United States. It joined the Confederate States of America, Confederacy, before the beginning of the American Civil War. The capital and largest city is Atlanta.

In the 2004 United States Presidential elections, Georgia was a red state, favoring the Republican party[1].

Polls in August 2009 show John Oxedine (R) and Roy Barnes (D) leading their respective primary races for the 2010 election for governor. On the Republican side, Oxendine leads with 39%, followed by Nathan Deal at 13% and Karen Handel at 12%.

On the Democratic side, Barnes tops the field at 45%, followed by Thurbert Baker at 29%.

  • Larry McDonald (1935-1983), a conservative Member of Congress, was onboard Korean Airlines Flight 007 when it was shot down by Soviet warplanes in 1983. His memory is honored in renamiong Interstate Highway 75, which runs from the Chattahoochee River northward to the Tennessee state line.
