In Major League Baseball, the general manager (GM) for a team is the executive in charge of player personnel. He is ultimately responsible for scouting, drafting, negotiating with, and signing players.

The term "general manager" is used to distinguish the GM from the team's manager, who is responsible for on-the-field decisions.
