Fort Ticonderoga was a fort in New York sitting on the coast of Lake Champlain. It built by the French in 1755 as Fort Carillon. During the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the fort was attacked twice by the British (unsuccessfully in 1758, captured and renamed in 1759). In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, Benedict Arnold, Ethan Allen, and his Green Mountain Boys from Vermont surprised the British and captured the fort. Later in the war, it was retaken by the British, but abandoned after the Battle of Saratoga.
