Fort Lauderdale is a city on the Atlantic coast of Florida, in Broward County, 23 miles north of Miami. It has a population of 167,000. The city, built around a system of canals, describes itself as the Venice of America, and is a popular tourist resort.

The city is built on the site of a Civil War-era fort, only seeing major growth after the arrival of the railway in 1896, and was incorporated in 1911.
