A felon is a person who has committed and been convicted of a felony, a serious crime. Because of the poor judgment shown in committing crimes, felons are not allowed to own guns or engage in certain professions. In some states, felons are not allowed to vote. However, the number of states where this is the rule has been dwindling in the face of liberal efforts to give more rights to felons, spurred by the presumption that felons are more likely to vote for Democrats. In most states, even murderers, rapists, and child molesters get the right to vote restored as soon as they are released from prison.
