An evangelical atheist is a person who preaches his atheism to religious people in an attempt to convert them away from their religion.
Evangelists in general use a number of techniques to convert people to their faith (or lack thereof). In the case of evangelical atheists, these techniques can manifest themselves like this:
- insisting that morality is independent of religion
- claiming that one can be good without attending religious services or reading the Bible
- pointing out that atrocities were caused by both religious and non-religious zealots
- fighting the idea that there is a correlation between crime, depression, anxiety, immorality, insanity and rejection of Christianity
- insisting that it is hypocrisy for a sinner to attend church
- criticizing religious institutions
- claiming that intelligence or personal value do not depend on religious faith
- citing evolution to counter Creationism
Organizations devoted to evangelical atheism, which may include some or more of the above characteristics, are growing. One organization, the Evangelical Atheist, puts down Americans on its website by saying, "A new poll from the First Amendment Center reveals that I may have misunderestimated the American people. They are far more ignorant than I had believed, and most of them see no need to go to the trouble of seeking truth when PR and rumors fit effortlessly into that same space in their consciousness. The majority of Americans (55%) believe that the Constitution established a Christian nation, and even more (65%) believe that the founding fathers intended the United States to be such."[1]
