Here is a growing list of the greatest myths of world history:

  1. Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake" was almost certainly never uttered. The phrase was likely invented by anti-monarchist revolutionaries seeking to have Marie and Louis XVI executed.
  2. Columbus set out to discover America; in fact, he set out to find a route to Asia, only to find an extremely large landmass in his way. Unlike many others, this myth is widely known to be false.
  3. That the Europeans deliberately spread smallpox to the American Indians; in fact, smallpox was endemic amongst Europeans, and they introduced it to the Americas unintentionally and without knowing the devastating effects it would have on the local population.
