Here is a growing list of the greatest myths of world history:

  1. Marie Antoinette's "Let them eat cake" was almost certainly never uttered. The phrase was likely invented by anti-monarchist revolutionaries seeking to have Marie and Louis XVI executed.
  2. Columbus set out to discover America; in fact, he set out to find a route to Asia, only to find an extremely large landmass in his way.
  3. That the Europeans intentionally spread smallpox to the American Indians; in fact, the germ theory of disease was not discovered until centuries later.
