Amebiasis is a disease caused by the single-celled parasite Entamoeba histolytica.
Entamoeba histolytica is a one celled species of parasitic protozoa that causes entamoebiasis and amebic dysentery.[1] Entamoeba histolytica infects predominantly humans and primates.[2] Amebiasis is one of the illnesses associated with gay bowel syndrome.

Although anyone can have this disease, it is more common in people who live in tropical areas with poor sanitary conditions. In the United States, amebiasis is most often found in travelers to and immigrants from these areas, as well as in people who live in institutions that have poor sanitary conditions. Men who have sex with men can also become infected. [3]
