Joshua Abraham Norton, was a San Francisco investor untl he was rendered bankrupt in 1859, whereupon he took up himself the role of Emperor of the United States of America and Protector of Mexico. The natives of the city humored him, printed his proclamations in the newspapers, and permitted him to support himself by selling 'promissory notes', which are now worth many times their original value.

in 1880, Norton was buried with full Masonic honors. Between 10,000 and 30,000 people are said to have attended his funeral, which was marked by an eclipse of the sun.

THe Discordians have a saying: "Everybody understands Mickey Mouse. Few understand Hermann Hesse. Hardly anybody understands Einstein. And nobody understands Emperor Norton."
