The digital dark age is the idea that outdated media and file formats can lead to loss of information as file formats become outdated, or software and hardware become inaccessible due to becoming obsolete. Old technologies, even those which were at one point widespread, could become obscure and unusable as the necessary skill sets are forgotten.
