'''Denver''' is the capital of [[Colorado]], and the state's largest city. The city sits on the eastern edge of the [[Rocky Mountains]]. Its nicknames include "The Mile-High City" (its downtown is 5286 feet above sea level), "Queen City of the Rockies," "Gateway to the Rockies," and "The Climate Capital of the World." Denver has been was selected to host the Democratic National Convention in August of 2008. Due to strong planning and a large police presence, the city avoided the large scale violence and rioting that occured later at the Republican convention in St. Paul.
Denver was founded in 1859, during the Colorado Gold Rush, as two distinct communities, Auraria and St Charles. St Charles was renamed Denver City in 1858 after territorial governor James W.
