The Democratic-Republican Party was one of the first two American political parties. They opposed strong central government. Notable Democratic-Republicans were Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. They may also be referred to as Jeffersonian Democrats, Jeffersonian Republicans, or Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans, as this distinguishes them from the modern Democratic Party and Republican Party.
