Daniel Thomas Flavin, known as Dan Flavin (born May 31, 1957),[1] is a real estate businessman in Lake Charles, Louisiana, who served from 1996 to 2005 as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 36[2] (Calcasieu and Cameron parishes). Flavin was elected as a Democrat in the nonpartisan blanket primary held on October 21, 1995. He defeated fellow Democrat Darrell Derouen, also of Lake Charles, 63-37 percent.[3] In 1997, Flavin switched his partisan affiliation to Republican and won new terms in 1999 and 2003. He resigned in the first part of his third term in 2005.[4]
Background
Flavin graduated in 1975 from Alfred M. Barbe High School (pronounced BARB), a public institution in Lake Charles and thereafter attended McNeese State University. He is a past chairman of the Louisiana Real Estate Commission. Formerly with Century 21 Real Estate in Lake Charles, he was the "Realtor of the Year” for Calcasieu Parish in 1987 and 1991, having been a past president of the Greater Calcasieu Board of Realtors. He is also affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church. Flavin and his wife, the former Lisa Joyce Jones (born May 18, 1957; their dates of birth are thirteen days apart.), reside in Lake Charles.[5]
Political career
Flavin first filed for the open House seat when the Democrat Randy Roach, later the mayor of Lake Charles, did not seek reelection in 1995. Flavin was unopposed in 1999. In 2003, he defeated a "No Party" candidate, 81-19 percent.[6] Upon Flavin’s resignation, his fellow Republican Chuck Kleckley of Lake Charles was elected to succeed him.[4] In the legislature, Flavin was involved in road projects, economic development, education, commerce, and insurance. He served on the Committees of Commerce, Retirement, and Natural Resources, and the House Executive Committee.[7]
In 2007, Flavin donated $500 to the 2008 third term reelection campaign of the Democrat U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who was subsequently unseated in 2014 by Republican Bill Cassidy. He also contributed to the reelection of Republican U.S. Representative Charles Boustany, Jr., of Lafayette in the 3rd congressional district now represented by Republican Clay Higgins.[8]
Flavin deposited his legislative papers with McNeese State University.[7]
