Craigslist

Craigslist, founded by Craig Newmark in 1995, is a website with region specific discussion forums and community bulletin boards with classified ads. It has become extremely popular as an alternative medium for advertising. 50 million advertisements for goods, services, and properties, among other things are posted every month. Most of these ads are free, with revenue derived from job postings and real estate in selected cities.

The website has been criticized because it becomes a place to advertise prostitutes and homosexuals services. eBay had a twenty-five percent ownership stake in craigslist. The relationship was shuttered and ended up in court.

Craigslist's success has been detrimental to newspapers that relied on overpriced advertising.

Murder

The vast majority of transactions that take place on Craigslist are without incident. However, high-profile murders have been reported due to Craigslist activity.

  • A 53-year-old Ohio man was charged with killing three men who had answered a Craigslist ad for work on a cattle farm.
  • A 28-year-old Georgia man was charged in the deaths of a couple that was looking to buy vintage cars on Craigslist.
  • A college student was lured by Craigslist iPhone ad before being killed in February 2015.
