2020 U.S. Senate bid
Republican primary
Messner's bid for Senate has received the endorsements of Sen. Rand Paul[1] and President Trump.[2] The latter's endorsement that was several months prior to the Republican primary election sparked criticism from Messner's then-primary opponent Don Bolduc, who claimed that the primary was rigged against him.[3] Messner ultimately won the primary by a handy margin to face Shaheen in the general election;[4] Bolduc conceded,[5] though openly refused to endorse him for the general election.[6] A debate was previously held between the two candidates.[7]
General election
A debate between Messner and Shaheen over the general election was held in mid-October 2020.[8] The race was rated as a safe hold for the incumbent senator by the Cook Political Report,[9] though RCP only considered it to be "Lean D".[10]
Messner ultimately lost the election by sixteen points to Shaheen.[11]
Political views
Messner is a libertarian-leaning conservative who is pro-life and, similar to Rand Paul, has expressed support for bringing U.S. troops out of the Middle East.[12]
Controversies
Messner reportedly was accused of domestic violence in 2006.[13] He was also arrested for DUI in 1995.[14]
A criminal probe was briefly sought into a foundation run by Messner;[15] a third-party audit later found no wrongdoing.[16]
