The College of William and Mary is a Virginia publicly supported university, founded in 1693,[2] per orders of the Virginia Company.[3] The school ranked #33 in US News's 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[4] The 2008 student-faculty ration was 12-1.[2]

As part of a review of more than 30 schools' logos that began in 2004,[5] William and Mary's logo was ruled "hostile and abusive" to the Native American community due to the presence of feathers.[6] William and Mary's appeal of the ruling was denied.[7] College president Gene R. Nichol responded to the ruling with outrage, saying, "I am compelled to say, at the outset, how powerfully ironic it is for the College of William & Mary to face sanction for athletic transgression at the hands of the NCAA," Nichol wrote. "The Association has applied its mascot standards in ways so patently inconsistent and arbitrary as to demean the entire undertaking."[7]
