He was first elected to the [[United States Senate]] in 1978. Since then, he has been was reelected four six straight times. He is currently the former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Levin graduated from [[Harvard Law School]] in 1959 and was admitted to the [[Michigan]] bar the same year. In [[Detroit]] he worked as a an assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan and chief appellate defender until 1969, when he joined the Detroit counsel counsel. In 1974, Levin was elected president of the Detroit city council and held the position until he ran for United States Senate in 1978.
