COINTELPRO, officially the COunter INTELligence PROgram, was an attempt by the FBI to disrupt radical left wing Communist organizations in the United States.[1]
The existence of COINTELPRO became publicly known when an office in Media, Pennsylvania was broken into by a group called the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI.[2]
Some of the groups targeted include the Weathermen and the Black Panther Party.
