Blake John Miguez (born November 21, 1981) is a Republican state representative for District 49, encompassing Iberia and Vermilion parishes in south Louisiana. He won a special election on February 21, 2015, to succeed Simone Champagne, who resigned to become the chief administrative officer for the city of Youngsville in Lafayette Parish.
On January 13, 2020, Miguez will become the new House Majority Leader, succeeding Lance Harris of Alexandria. Sherman Mack, an attorney in Livingston Parish is the apparent new Speaker, replacing the term-limited Taylor Barras of New Iberia.[1]
Background
Miguez graduated in 1999 from Catholic High School in New Iberia. In 2004, he completed studies in political science at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. In 2008, he received his law degree from the historically black Southern University Law Center, also in Baton Rouge.[2][3]
Though born in Lafayette, Miguez resides in New Iberia. In 2014, he formed the company SeaTran Marine, which is engaged in the petroleum and natural gas industries. He is the president and chief executive officer of the company. From 2008 to 2014, he was the executive vice president of Miguez Fuel, the company of his father, Steven Joseph Miguez (born November 2, 1953). He is also a licensed corporate attorney.[4]
Miguez is a competitive semiprofessional shooter, a grand master of the United States Practical Shooting Association. He began shooting at an early age at a local range with his father. At the age of twelve, he started at USPSA and the International Practical Shooting Confederation. At the age of seventeen, he was a grand master in the use of a Beretta 92F.[5]He appeared on the History Channel's Top Gun series[6]
Political life
In the first campaign in 2015, Miguez defeated fellow Republican John Robert Bering (born March 1959) of Jeanerette in Iberia Parish, a United States Army veteran who works as a helicopter pilot servicing the Gulf of Mexico. The margin was 93 to 7 percent.[7] In the regular primary for a full legislative term in 2015, Miguez again defeated John Bering, 85-15 percent.[8] No one stepped forward to challenge Miguez in the primary held on October 12, 2019, when he won his second full term.
Miguez serves on these House committees: Appropriations, Labor and Industrial Relations, Naural Resources and Environment, and Budget.[4]
