Angela Burks Hill (born August 14, 1965), is a former science educator from Picayune, Mississippi, who has since 2012 represented District 40 in the Mississippi State Senate. A Republican, her district includes Marion and Pearl River counties in the southwestern corner of her state.[1]
A native of Picayune in Pearl River County, Angela Burks graduated in 1983 from Picayune Memorial High School. She then studied at Pearl River Community College at Poplarville and the University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg. She formerly taught at Pearl River Central Elementary School and the Roseland Park Baptist Church Academy. She is a Baptist. Her husband, Richard Byron Hill, is a Picayune home builder. The couple has two children, Andrew Byron Hill and Kelly Gray Hill.[2] In 2011, the two-term District 40 Republican senator, Sidney Albritton,[3] lost his bid for re-nomination to Angela Hill, who polled 3,452 votes (52.3 percent) to Albritton's 3,154 (47.7 percent) in the GOP runoff contest. Hill then ran without opposition in the November 8 general election. In 2015, she ran unopposed in both her primary and the November 3 general election.[4][5]
Hill is the chairman of the Senate Investigate State Offices Committee and the vice chairman of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. She also sits on these committees: (1) Agriculture, (2) Appropriations, (3) Education, (4) Environmental Protection, Conservation, and Water Resources, (5) Insurance, and (6) Judiciary B.[2]
In 2012, Senator Hill voted to require photo identification to vote in Mississippi and to establish charter schools. In 2013, she sponsored the bill which requires that prescriptions that lead to abortion be administered by physicians. In 2014, she voted to prohibit abortions in Mississippi past twenty weeks of gestation of the unborn. She sponsored the proposal that abortion counseling not be mentioned by crisis pregnancy centers in the state, but that measure failed to gain Senate approval. In 2016, she voted to prohibit state funds to the large abortion provider, Planned Parenthood. She backed the bill to guarantee within Mississippi protections for religious beliefs and matters of moral conscience. In 2017, she co-sponsored the prohibition against local governments pursuing sanctuary city policies. She supported the legislation which authorizes additional methods of execution in Mississippi and co-sponsored another measure to declare as a hate crime the targeting of law-enforcement officers by the lawless element. She voted to retain a private contractor to audit Medicaid.[6]
