1. Unfair taxes—Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Proclamation Act, Townshend Acts; ‘virtual’ representation did not satisfy (nor should it) the colonies; they came to the New World for freedom, and England suppressed and taxed them from overseas—they wanted freedom and the American Revolution was inevitable.

2. Patrick Henry- because England was taxing the colonies without giving them representation back in their mother country. They said that the colonies had ‘virtual representation’.

3. England passed the Tea Act of 1773- so Sam Adams led a group of colonists to a ship carrying over a million dollars worth of tea- and dumped it all into the Boston Harbor.

4. I think that if I had to blame anyone, I would blame the Puritans—they set up such a strict religious ‘government’ it’s almost like they were just asking for some sort of scandal to come along.

5. False- I think those that had more religious freedom had more to fight for. They weren’t just fighting for land or money, they were fighting for what they believed in.

6. Debate: George Washington. Was he great, and if so, why?: I think that George Washington was great. I do not think that he was in any way the greatest man or president, but he gave up power when it was offered to him and was a selfless general- when he was the general of an army who was going without much food or protection, he refused anything that his men did not have, because if they were suffering, so would he- this really inspired his men.

7. I think that this cartoon is implying the importance for the colonies to stand together, because if they lost even one of the colonies, they all were sure to suffer. It was probably drawn in the 1750’s.

H1. I found it interesting that so many people chose to live past the proclamation line.

H2. Britain taxed the colonies through ‘stamps’ that the colonists had to pay for to put on most of the products they bought from England on top of all the ridiculous taxes that they were already paying. I do not think that Britain was right to relentlessly tax the colonists. They were already making money off the raw materials that the colonies were importing to England. There was no need for them to tax them excessively.

H5. Debate: Do you think a jury should be able to ignore the law in order to find a defendant “not guilty?”: I do not think that a jury should be allowed to ignore the law to justify the defendant. If they make exceptions to the law when they want, then others can point at that and find those who really are guilty- not guilty and justify it.
