I appreciate the Monroe Administration for its conservative values the progress and peace associated with the times, but I believe that its most important accomplishment was effectively establishing the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine essentially told Europe to leave the Americas alone. This was one of the first important foreign policy moves that our country made, and to this day it is often sited.

1. What was the "Revolution of 1800"?

The Revolution of 1800 refers to the first time in modern history that power shifted peacefully as a result of an election. More specifically, this revolution was the shift of power from the Federalist Party to the Democratic-Republican Party, when Thomas Jefferson was voted into office.

2. If you were the president, would you have approved the Louisiana Purchase? Explain.

I would have approved the Louisiana Purchase. Not only was it an incredible deal (it came out to only several cents an acre), but it also saved us the money that we would have most likely had to spend later to protect our border. The fact that it provided our growing nation with invaluable farm land is also significant. 3. Identify a cause of the War of 1812. One cause of the War of 1812 was the “Chesapeake Affair” during which a British ship seized an American one in international waters. This was very humiliating to the Americans, and led to increased tensions between the new nation and her former mother country.

4. Describe what you like most about the Monroe Administration.

5. Explain what is meant by "Jacksonian Democracy."

“Jacksonian Democracy” refers to the political philosophy of Andrew Jackson. He believed in a strong federal government under a powerful executive.

6. Explain what the Marshall Court is known for.

The Marshall Court refers to the Supreme Court when it was under Chief Justice John Marshall. The Marshall Court is famous for expanding federal power and establishing the practice of judicial activism. Its most famous case was Marbury v. Madison, in which it asserted the power of the Supreme Court to declare a law unconstitutional (this is called judicial review).

7. Identify the figures in the cartoon, provide an approximate date, and describe the likely viewpoint of the cartoonist:

The bear, “Bruin”, represents Russia, the bull, “John Bull”, represents Britain and the woman, “Columbia”, represents America. It depicts the treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. The cartoonist was clearly an American, as he depicts America as a beautiful woman, and Britain as a bull. The cartoonist also felt that America was victorious, because John Bull (Britain) is depicted on his knees, eagerly clutching the hand of the peacemaker, Russia, while “Columbia” (America) stands tall, and is shown graciously extending her hand towards peace. This was drawn circa 1813.
