Albuquerque is the largest city in the state of New Mexico, located close to the Rio Grande river.

History

Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish military outpost. [1] Provincial Governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdez named the town after the Duke of Alburquerque, viceroy of New Spain from 1702 to 1710. [2]

Population

The population of Albuquerque in 2005 was 484,246 inhabitants. [3] The residents are ethnically diverse, with a significant number of Pueblo Indians and a majority Hispanics. [4]

Government

The Mayor is appointed to a 4 year term of service. The City Council is comprised of nine elected members, one from each district, and is the legislative authority of the city, with the power to adopt ordinances, resolutions, and other city legislation. [5]

Climate

Albuquerque usually has dry, sunny weather all year, almost no rainfall, hot summers, and mild to cold winters. [6] [7]

Transportation

Albuquerque International Sunport is New Mexico's largest commercial airport. [8] Two interstate highways intersect in Albuquerque: Interstate 25, a north-south route from Canada to Mexico and Interstate 40, running east-west. Albuquerque is accessible by Amtrak and the Burlington-Northern-Santa Fe Railroad. [9]
