An agamist is a person who is unmarried, or who is opposed to marriage.[1] While the use of the word is uncommon in contemporary American culture, the practice of cohabitation without marriage is, if anything, on the upswing, to the concern of many who support the concept of marriage and the traditional family unit. In America, for example, the number of children born to unwed parents increased from approximately 12% in 1970 to almost 33% in 2002.[2] Similar figures also hold true in Europe.[3]
