Advertising is taking a deliberate action to get recognition among a given population group for some purpose. Most advertising is paid for with the specific goal of selling a product or service. Some advertising neither costs money nor does it produce revenue. As an example, public service annoucements warning of the dangers of cigarettes are often times run for free, and do not result in spending money on a product, merely living healthier and longer.
