North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen) is one of the sixteen federal states (German: Bundesland) of Germany. With roughly 18,000,000 inhabitants, it's the Bundesland with the greatest population (22% of all Germans live here.)

Though Cologne is the biggest city in North Rhine-Westfalia - and one of the oldest, too - Dusseldorf (German: Düsseldorf) is the capital.

The central part of North Rhine-Westphalia is the Ruhr area (German: Ruhrgebiet), the historical center of the heavy industry in Germany.
