Bayard was born in [[Philadelphia]] on February 21, 1742, the son of Samuel Smith. He was educated in [[England]], and attended [[Princeton College]]. After graduating from Princeton in 1760, he joined his father in business.

==Continental Congress==
Bayard was elected to the Continental Congress in 1777 and served until 1778, during which time he signed the [[Articles of Confederation]].

==Death==
Smith died in Philadelphia on June 16, 1812, and was buried in the graveyard of the Second Presbyterian Church.

*Secretary of the [[Committee of Safety]] in 1775.
*Served as a lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania militia.
*One of the founders of the University of the State of Pennsylvania; later a trustee of Princeton College.
