[[Mark]] (or John Mark), its author, was most likely the young son (perhaps ten years old) of a woman who was a follower and supporter of [[Jesus]]. Mark was a close aide to and possibly a scribe for Peter, who referred to him as his "son".<ref>1 Peter 5:13</ref>

The Gospel of Mark focuses more on human frailties and weaknesses than the other Gospels, and devotes less attention to the parables. Mark apparently describes his own shame as he witnessed and fled from Jesus's arrest: "A certain young man was following him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the linen cloth and ran off naked."<ref>Mark 14:51-52 ([[New Revised Standard Version]]).</ref>
