Prior to that he was a member of [[Congress]]. Attacked mercilessly in the press once he was announced as the selection to be Bush's running mate, his every move was scrutinized. As Vice President, he had a much publicized feud with [[Murphy Brown]], who was a fictional single mother. Dan Quayle said that she was a poor role model for getting pregnant out of wedlock and there was a big fight in the media. Quayle was criticized for debating the lifestyle of a person who did not actually exist. He was also criticised for misspelling "[[potato]]" as "potatoe," when it was written wrong on the cards he was given to judge a grade school spelling bee contest. In hindsight he is remembered as a loyal [[Republican]] and loyal [[conservative]], advocating a conservative agenda and for [[traditional values]].
