Media bullying is aggressive bias by the media in the attempt to influence the outcome of an event. The event can be an election, an expected statement by an individual, or even a sports contest.

Examples of media bullying include:

* sex abuse in public schools is worse than in religious institutions, yet the media constantly bullies religious (especially Catholic) figures about it
* the media bullies Paris Hilton as dumb, but she's no dumber than other Hollywood figures
* the media bullies the competition of Tiger Woods in every major golf contest

Media bias is distortion of news, commentary, non-fiction articles, textbooks, documentaries, speech codes and the like to favor one side's ideas and over another's (see partisanship). Dictatorships which suppress freedom of the press are notorious for their media bias, particularly when all media are controlled directly by a one-party government.

Most journalism schools in free countries address the issue of eliminating bias, although efforts are rarely successful. The U.S. media have a strong liberal bias.

Sources of bias
#Deliberate propaganda: Presenting bias with the intention of benefiting the media establishment.
#Institutional bias: The reporters and editors of a media organisation may hold political views, which influence their reporting.
#Sensationalism: Media depends on viewers for financial support. Thus 'irrelevant' stories may receive attention disproportionate to their impact.
#Omission: The inverse of sensationalism, media may overlook important but boring stories.
#Simplification: Highly complicated subjects may be omitted or greatly simplified, to avoid alienating viewers or making them feel uneducated.
#Political correctness or sensitivity: Fearful of appearing racist or discriminatory, media may avoid any stories which reflect negatively on a ethnic, social or religious group, especially if the group is a minority.
#Audience bias: Readers or viewers tend to read news sources with which they agree. Thus, media must reinforce the existing views of their audience, or risk losing them. This source of bias can also reinforce the effect of a moral panic. In this case, the public may receive a distorted perspective that is a result of their own preferences, because the news media will deliberately deliver news not only suitable and desirable to the general public, but may also incorporate bias that would similarly suit the viewer.

Academic Studies and theories of media bias
The Media Elite, co-authored in 1986 by political scientists Robert Lichter, Stanley Rothman, and Linda Lichter is among the most cited academic study of political bias in news reporting. These researchers surveyed journalists at national media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, and the broadcast networks. They found that most of the responding journalists were Democratic voters whose attitudes were far to the left of the general public on a variety of topics: homosexual rights, abortion, affirmative action, and so on. The study argued that the way in which journalists wrote about controversial issues was directly related to their personal political positions.

Independently corroborating the findings above, is the 2002 book length study by political communication researcher Jim A. Kuypers: Press Bias and Politics: How the Media Frame Controversial Issues. In this study of 116 mainstream US papers (including The New York Times, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle), Kuypers found that the mainstream print press in America operate within a narrow range of liberal beliefs. Those who expressed points of view further to the left were generally ignored, whereas those who expressed moderate or conservative points of view were often actively denigrated or labeled as holding a minority point of view. In short, if a political leader, regardless of party, spoke within the press-supported range of acceptable discourse, he or she would receive positive press coverage. If a politician, again regardless of party, were to speak outside of this range, he or she would receive negative press or be ignored. Kuypers also found that the liberal points of view expressed in editorial and opinion pages were found in hard news coverage of the same issues. Although focusing primarily on the issues of race and homosexuality, Kuypers found that the press injected opinion into its news coverage of other issues such as welfare reform, environmental protection, and gun control; in all cases favoring a liberal point of view.

Evolutionists, or believers in the theory of evolution, have a trademark style of argument that includes:

* insistence on censorship of any and all opposing evidence and viewpoints, and retaliation against anyone who dares to disagree
* attempted proof by assertion. The classic case of such conduct was Sir Charles Lyell's advocacy of uniformitarianism, which establishes the required deep time scale and as such is the very linchpin of the evolutionary paradigm.
* argumentum ad hominem, or excessive personal attacks that often include childish name-calling and personal put-downs, more so than other debaters
* proof by authority, or highlighting their own academic credentials or those of their allies in support of their theories. An academic credential can include anything from a publishing credit (especially in a "peer-reviewed" journal) to a degree to a particular academic appointment. However, Ben Stein (Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed) shows that evolutionists add this twist: they systematically deny to others, whenever they can, any opportunity to acquire similar credentials.
* use of bizarre jargon such as "quote mining," "moving the goalposts" and "fundies"; use of incoherent phrases like "unconvincingly hysterical"
* inordinate attempt to demonize the other side, as in overuse of the term creationist and fundamentalist. The latter example includes the attempt to show that Christian fundamentalists are morally equivalent to Muslim fundamentalists, whether in their extreme rejection of modernity or in their practice and advocacy of terrorism.
* an astounding lack of understanding -- or denial -- of how most great scientists and mathematicians either rejected evolution or were silent about it
* an equal lack of understanding, or denial, that most of the greatest scientists in the Western world asserted the reality of creation and the Great Flood prior to the Enlightenment, or else a denial that their scientific achievements (including those of Sir Isaac Newton!) matter today.
* frequent reliance on circular reasoning, as in defining evolution as change and survival of the fittest as those who survive
* projection&mdash;literally, "throwing off" their own faults on the other side, in that they accuse the other side of doing the very things that they themselves do.
* claiming to enjoy scientific debate yet often refusing to debate creationists.
* refusing to allow the possibility that God exists.
* claiming that so-called "Theistic evolution" is possible, which would indicate that the events that took place in Genesis are false (meaning God lied about them) or allegoric.
* ignoring the clear historical link between Darwinism, Eugenics, and the Holocaust.
* deliberate ignorance about phenomena that evolution cannot explain, such as remarkable migration and homing, or the existence of the whale
* claim that the theory of evolution can be used as an applied science, like the development of flu vaccines, but continuing to support the theory when the application fails.

Professor values refer to the common value system embraced by a large percentage of professors, just as Hollywood values refers to the common value system of many in Hollywood.

An extremely high percentage of professors disagree with conservative principles. Professors' common value system typically includes atheism, censorship, socialism, unjustified claims of expertise and knowledge (for example, the dogmatic promotion of the theory of evolution), liberal beliefs, liberal grading, liberal bias, anti-patriotism, lack of productivity, bullying or discouraging conservative students (for example, homeschoolers), and promotion of sexual immorality.
In a Zogby poll, 58% of Americans said that the bias of professors is a serious problem, while 39% said it is a "very serious" problem. The survey demonstrated further that "an overwhelming majority also believe that job security for college professors leaves them less motivated to do a good job than those professors who do not enjoy a tenured status - 65% said they believe non-tenured professors are more motivated to do a good job in the classroom."

Professors block the granting of a tenured professorship to anyone who:

* criticizes the theory of evolution
* criticizes feminism and/or abortion
* opposes the homosexual agenda

Politicians, including liberal ones, are routinely given high-ranking academic positions. Examples include:

* Al Gore
* instead of admitting that Democrats were wrong in opposing the Gulf War, John Kerry stated, "There is not a right or wrong here. There was a correctness in the president's judgment about timing. But that does not mean there was an incorrectness in the judgment other people made about timing. ... Again and again and again in the debate, it was made clear that the vote of the U.S. Senate and the House on the authorization of immediate use of force on Jan. 12 was not a vote as to whether or not force should be used."

Liberal denial is the tendency of liberals to conceal, deny or censor the truth for ideological reasons. A list of the top ten common instances of liberal denial are the following:

# liberals deny they are liberal, and that most of the media are liberal
# the intellectual justification for Hitler's attempt to build a master Aryan race was the theory of evolution
# liberals have censored prayer in public school
# a woman significantly reduces her risk of breast cancer by having children rather than abortions
# most promiscuous people carry sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and those STDs cause infertility
# the strident promoters of evolution generally have weaker credentials than advocates of intelligent design
# college faculties at nearly every school are completely dominated by liberals, and have virtually no conservatives
# homosexuality shortens lifespan for a variety of reasons
# more than 80% of child molesters are pornography addicts
# reducing the number of guns, which is primarily a defensive weapon, results in an increase in crime

More generally, liberals also deny:

# feminists censor discussion about differences between men and women, and boys and girls
# obesity is a bigger problem than hunger
# that a school having virtually no conservative teachers and many atheists and liberals is a liberal school
# that liberals attempt to intimidate and ostracize conservatives, particularly in school environments and some occupations.
# that liberals support taxpayer-funded abortion
# that girls and women in sports have debilitating ACL knee injuries at 3-4 times the rate of men, and are vulnerable to other injuries
# that young mass murderers fit the profile of public school-trained atheism
# that Ronald Reagan's public exhortation, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," helped cause the nearly 30-year-old Berlin Wall later be torn down
# that gun control increases crime
# that reducing taxes stimulates the economy
# that choosing abortion over childbirth increases the risk of breast cancer
# that the mainstream media is biased
# that privately-run transport is more efficient than government-run transport
# that public health care is inferior medical care
# that unions interfere with employment opportunities
# that liberal leaders engage in shocking wrongdoing, hypocrisy, and abuse of power
# that ideas do matter, and can cause great harm, including liberal falsehoods
# that Islamic extremism is a threat to the Western civilization
# that banning same-sex marriage is analogous to banning polygamy
# that aggressive interrogation is often the only way to obtain answers from terrorists
# how the liberal ideology is pushed on unsuspecting others, particularly youngsters

Often liberals refuse to admit that they are liberals, in the hope of appearing more reasonable. Hillary Clinton refused to admit in a presidential debate in 2007 that she is a liberal. Similarly, Michael Dukakis refused for a while to admit that he was a liberal during the 1988 presidential campaign. Only out of desperation did Dukakis admit that he was a liberal, and even then he admitted only that was a liberal like President Harry Truman, who served 40 years earlier.

Liberal logic is an argument by a liberal that is deceptively attractive to some, but is actually nonsensical. Here are some examples:

# frequent reliance on circular reasoning, as in demanding censorship of intelligent design while simultaneously citing the resulting silence as proof against it
# often a liberal responds to a logical comment or question with an (illogical) expression of personal like or dislike, as in "but I like it!"
# claim that switching from heterosexual to homosexual is customary, but switching back is somehow impossible
# criticize Christians for literal interpretations of Genesis, but then insist on even more literal interpretations when it suits the liberal ideology
# no matter what happens in the weather, global warming caused it
# belief that a correlation and/or causation (e.g., between atheism and suicide) can be disproved by a counterexample (e.g., one atheist who remained sane)
# Americans should "move on" past the misconduct of Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy, but should dig up as much old dirt as possible about John McCain
# if [highly implausible assumption like "embryonic stem cell research will find the cure for paralysis"], then would you support it (without any consideration of alternatives)?
# Barack Obama on Afghanistan: with fewer soldiers, we didn't have enough ammo and humvees!
# personal experience dictates personal views, rather than rising above bad and/or unusual experiences and basing one's views on logic
# never admit shame for liberal behavior, but often tell others they should be ashamed of themselves
# free speech for anything and everything ... except the conservative truth, and religion.
# Hollywood promotion of abortion is welcomed, but views of Hollywood actresses towards their own children are concealed
# insisting that an atheistic culture cannot harm anyone, but also insisting that classroom prayer can cause harm
# carrying an unborn child to birth reduces risk of breast cancer, but choosing abortion rather than childbirth somehow does not increase the relative risk
# requesting increased spending by government to reduce poverty, which actually poverty is increased by the dependency
# insisting on "tolerance" for anything that is anti-Christian, while censorship for anything is Christian
# insisting that teaching abstinence does not reduce premarital sex and associated disease
# denying that widespread ownership of guns, largely defensive weapons, can reduce crime
# insisting that increasing taxes must increase government revenue, when often people just work less and revenues then decline
# Even though the Supreme Court overrules precedents every year by 5-4 votes, Roe v. Wade cannot be overruled, or can only be overruled if it is a unanimous 9-0 vote (this argument tries to make irreversible law out of the dicta in a weak majority opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, even though the very creation of that "secret opinion" was procured by liberal deceit.)
# The pronoun "he" has been used to include men and women for centuries, but liberals find that illogical today

#Deceit
#Holding conservatives to a higher standard than they hold themselves.
#Bullying.
#Censorship.
#Capturing and misleading youth.
#Sowing division among conservatives, such as atheists complaining that one particular prayer might offend someone of another religion.
#Desensitization.
#Jamming.
#Conversion.
#Undermining religion.
#Mocking conservative interpretations of science.
#Portraying criminals and miscreants as being on the other side of the political fence.
#Dismissing criticism for no other reason than it comes from a conservative.
#Using the term "conservative" as a pejorative.
#Insisting on "globalist" terms and phrasing to the detriment of American English and meanings. This is an effort to promote "one worldism".

Here are some common liberal tricks that many people fall for:

# distract and disrupt reasoned discussion, as in stating irrelevant claims, inconsequential tales of personal experience, or false outrage
# claim expertise beyond one's area of expertise, as in a "Dr." or professor implying that he is an expert in an area beyond his specialty
# make arguments that have superficial appeal to the dimwitted, but are actually nonsensical and probably not believed by the liberal himself
# pretend that liberals do not have a political point of view, but are just being reasonable
# exaggerate praise for fellow liberals; pretend that atheism equals intelligence
# in court decisions, hold in favor of the conservative side by using liberal reasons that will be cited for liberal outcomes in future cases
# liberals befriend you so you should become liberal (why don't they become conservative?)
# "live and let live!" except when it comes to praying aloud in school, keeping the money you earn, building on your own property, and every other liberal issue
# it doesn't hurt to try! (In reference to drugs, alcohol, and other immoral behaviors)
# everyone else supposedly believes in something so it must be right
# your parents aren't cool; Hollywood values are cool; professor values are brilliant
# there is a shortage of everything we want
# prayer is for dummies, or is antiquated
# kids are getting smarter than old folks
# smear your adversary with a highly offensive accusation or insinuation
# call someone a racist if he criticizes a liberal having a different skin color
# demonize conservatives and pretend they don't care about regular people
# if you don't like it (something offensive on television), don't watch it (but they don't seem to go for if you don't like whales being killed, don't watch them being killed).

Example
Here is an example of an actual attempt at liberal tricks that was posted on this very page:

The above example (by a non-American) attempts to smear a conservative by implying that he has a mental illness, reflecting liberal trick #15 above. To someone unfamiliar with liberal tricks, this can be upsetting and intimidating. But once one realizes that this is a basic trick from the liberal playbook, its silliness and ineffectiveness becomes obvious. The liberal's foolish tactic is then revealed for what it really is.

Liberal bias is partisan support for liberal positions or policies. This bias pervades encyclopedias, periodicals and broadcast media, and the Internet. It is expressed by reporters and other journalists in mainstream media and by teachers in public school and in many private schools.fact It includes techniques such as placement bias, photo bias and liberal style. There is a difference between being liberal, having a liberal perspective, and having a liberal bias.

In the absence of clear rules to prevent the bias, it will often occur due to:
*political correctness
*a tendency to exaggerate and deceive to attract attention
*a reliance on obscenity to attract attention
*an attempt to be "consistent" by treating men and women alike
*where images are used, an obsession with race

The Media Confronts Liberal Bias
Ann Coulter wrote:
*To obscure the overwhelming liberal dominance of the media, the few designated media "conservatives" are cited tirelessly in testimonies to the ideological diversity in the nation's newsrooms. Democrats in the media are editors, national correspondents, news anchors, and reporters. Republicans in the media are "from the right" polemicists grudgingly tolerated within the liberal behemoth. Republican views must be accompanied by a conspicuous warning: "Partisan Conservative Opinion Coming!" Neutral news slots are reserved for Democrats exclusively. "Balance" is created by having a liberal host a debate between a liberal and a moderate Republican.

Although many prominent liberal journalists and teachers deny being biased - or indeed that liberal bias exists at all in the media - same have freely admitted it (e.g., Andy Rooney).fact

New York Times publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. has denied the the New York Times has a liberal viewpoint and has stated the New York Times has an "urban" viewpoint. However, in the summer of 2004, the newspaper's then public editor (ombudsman), Daniel Okrent, published a piece on the Times' liberal bias and cited the example of their coverage of homosexual marriage. In regards to the Western World, although the New York Times has a particularly heavy bias when it comes to the homosexuality issue, the New York Times is not unusual in regards to the media having a liberal bias when it comes to the subject of homosexuality; see Homosexuality in the Media. John Stossel is an author, consumer reporter, and a co-anchor for the ABC News show 20/20. Cybercast News Service states the following regarding regarding the influence of the New York Times and Washington Post:

CBS News
CBS insider Bernard Goldberg wrote the definitive book on liberal bias in the media, simply entitled Bias.
*He asserts that an "inability to see liberal views as liberal views ... is at the heart of the entire problem."
*He wrote: "Pauline Kael, for years the brilliant film critic at the New Yorker, was completely baffled about how Richard Nixon could have beaten George McGovern in 1972: 'Nobody I know voted for Nixon.' Never mind that Nixon carried 49 states. She wasn't kidding."

Goldberg also suggested liberals don't even see their liberal values as "liberal":
*"Their views on all the big social issues ... aren't liberal views at all. They're simply reasonable views, shared by all the reasonable people the media elites mingle with ..."
Peter D. Feaver of the Boston Globe noted on the sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that MoveOn.org ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times accusing General David Petraeus of activities befitting a traitor. The advertisement alleges, without evidence, that Petraeus would not give an honest, professional assessment of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Feaver noted, "The MoveOn.org ad is vicious ... a deliberate attack on the senior Army commander, in a major daily newspaper, with the intention of destroying as much of his credibility as possible...part of an elaborate effort to undermine public support for the Iraq war, and was foreshadowed by an unnamed Democratic senator who told a reporter, "No one wants to call [Petraeus] a liar on national TV . . . The expectation is that the outside groups will do this for us." The effort is funded by powerful special interests, and has all the trappings of a major political campaign.
Media Bias
A 2005 report by Tim Groseclose and Jeffrey Milyo political scientists at UCLA concluded that, based on estimated ideological scores, all of the news
outlets they examined, except Fox News’ Special Report and the Washington Times, showed a strong liberal bias (scores to the left of the average member of Congress). Of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 scored left of center, with CBS' "Evening News," The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times ranking second, third and fourth most liberal behind the news pages of The Wall Street Journal. Only Fox News' "Special Report With Brit Hume" and The Washington Times scored right of the average U.S. voter.
<blockquote>
"I suspected that many media outlets would tilt to the left because surveys have shown that reporters tend to vote more Democrat than Republican," said Tim Groseclose, a UCLA political scientist and the study's lead author. "But I was surprised at just how pronounced the distinctions are."
</blockquote>

Vision of the anointed
Economist Thomas Sowell in his book published in 1996, The Vision of the Anointed, discusses the anointed vision of liberals and liberalism to promote their agenda, and control the writing of history and the national consciousness.

Desperate evasions of discordant evidence, and the denigration and even demonizing of those presenting such evidence, are indicative of the high stakes in contemporary culture wars, which are not about alternative policies but alternative worlds and of alternative roles of liberals in these worlds. Opponents must be shown to be not merely mistaken but morally lacking. This approach replaces the intellectual discussion of arguments by the moral extermination of persons. This denigration or demonizing of those opposed to their views not only has the desired effect of discrediting the opposition but also has the unintended effect of cutting off the path of retreat from positions which become progressively less tenable with the passage of time and the accumulation of discordant evidence. The very thought that those dismissed as simplistic or maligned might have been right–even if only on a single issue–is at best galling and potentially devastating. Their last refuge in this situation are their good intentions.

For liberals, it is desperately important to win because their whole sense of themselves is at stake. Given the high stakes, it is not hard to understand the all-out attacks of liberals on those who differ from them and their attempts to stifle alternative sources of values and beliefs, with campus speech codes and ‘political correctness’ being prime examples of a spreading pattern of taboos. Here they are not content to squelch contemporary voices, they must also silence history and traditions–the national memory–as well. This too is a larger danger than the dangers flowing from particular policies.

History is the memory of a nation–and that memory is being erased by historians enthralled by liberalism. Open disdain for mere facts has been accompanied by adventurous reinterpretations known as ‘revisionist’ history. This is all yet another expression of the notion that reality is optional.

A very similar development in the law treats the Constitution as meaning not what those who wrote it meant, but what one small segment of the public today wants it to mean. This is the ‘living constitution’ of ‘evolving standards,’ reflecting what ‘thinking people’ believe. The law itself has been prostituted to the service of ideological crusades. The social cohesion that makes civilized life possible has been loosened by the systematic undermining of families and of commonly shared values and a common culture.
